Police Officer Christopher Backus is a Washington law enforcement professional with experience across municipal policing, corrections, and county detention. A native of Olympia, Washington, Backus has built his career around public service, professional training, community engagement, and continued development as a law enforcement officer. Backus attended Capital High School before earning an associate degree from South Puget Sound Community College. He later earned a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice with a minor in Psychology from Saint Martin’s University, receiving academic scholarships during his college education. His professional background includes service with the Washington State Department of Corrections, Shelton Police Department, Mason County Jail, Tukwila Police Department, Tenino Police Department, and Grand Coulee Police Department. Training is a particularly important part of Backus’s approach to law enforcement. He believes officers benefit from continually developing their knowledge, preparation, and professional skills throughout their careers. Backus also considers community engagement essential, particularly when law enforcement agencies have opportunities to build positive connections with juveniles. Outside of his professional responsibilities, Backus enjoys working out, softball, camping, hiking, fly fishing, and spending time with family.
